What color hair dye should I get to lighten my hair?

I have naturally dirty blonde hair, and I dyed it dark brown a couple months ago. Well I just bought some dark brown hair dye because my roots were growing out and the root touch up did not work. But my hair turned black, and we just used some dirty blonde hair dye to try and lighten it, but it didn’t change at all. What should I do?

My mom has dyed her hair and you can still see some of her white hair.Some strands here and there. She has like dark brown hair with with some white…she want s to keep it natural color. What hair dye will do the job on covering it? Thanks.

I wear my hair natural and I’ve been dying and highlight it for about 3 years twice a year. Although my hair has grown the ends have been breaking. I started off using herbal essence, then switched to texture and tones for women and color, then last year i tried Feria by loreal. 5 years a go i used a rinse dye and it just ruined my towels and would wash out. What is the best hair dye and highlighting brand for african american hair?
